Chickenfoot, Lignano Sabbiadoro 05/07/2009

For any lovers of chickens out there, especially their feet, a small and (very) hard rock/blues band rolled into the Italian seaside resort Lignano Sabbiadoro the other nite (located coincidentally right next door to the town`s small city hall which was built by my uncle in the 1970s, a well-known architect who worked in the area for some 50 years), America`s Chickenfoot!

The supergroup is made up of lead vocalist Sammy Hagar of Van Halen and Montrose fame, bass guitarist Michael Anthony (unlike Hagar, Anthony`s an original member of Van Halen with the V.H. bros and legendary “Jump” vocalist David Lee Roth), the madman of rock drumming, Chad Smith (does Red Hot Chili Peppers ring a bell?) and guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani (whom I had seen just a year ago in the Udine area).

The band came to promote their one and only self-titled album which was released in June, 2009. The tiny Lignano arena must have had an audience of not even 2,000 people. As small as the public was many nevertheless came along for the curiosity and to also see four individual great musicians all on the same stage. The repertoire, given their only sole album, was rather short (roughly 90 minutes) but to the very much to the POINT! Their style of play was basically high-energy rock`n`roll.

Hagar has publicly stated that their music is somewhat similar to Led Zep (another coincidence: the last concert I saw in Lignano`s arena was two years ago with an awesome Robert Plant!). If you listen closely, you concur with what Hagar`s said. “Sexy Little Thing” packs one mean punch and is personally my favourite (which lucky for me they also played). Satriani too didn`t hold back as he contorted on his guitar with his traditional sunglasses. Quite the spectacle to again see a man who at had in 1993 momentarily filled in for a fellow by the name of Ritchie Blackmore over at the other famous group, Deep Purple! “Get It Up” was a sort of homage to the late, great Hendrix and “Purple Haze”. Great show for a great band (all pics by M. Rimati)!
