Foo Fighters blew the roof off of ancient villa!
Founding member Dave Grohl (the former drummer of the grunge group Nirvana) of America’s Foo Fighters rocked his way through the magnificent Villa Manin near Udine in front of 18,000+ adoring fans. What made this concert special was that it was the band’s only Italian concert, so fans flocked from nearby Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and the rest of Italy just to hear this great band. Their concert was opened up by Bob Gould, the former singer of Husker Du, and by America’s Gaslight Anthem.
Grohl founded the band in 1994 shortly after the tragic death of Nirvana’s singer Kurt Cobain (who had committed suicide). Since then, the band’s won a total of 11 Grammy Awards, including 5 at the 2012 edition (the 6th was instead picked up by Adele for album of the year).
When Grohl first started Foo Fighters, their music was often compared to that of his previous group, Nirvana. Grohl acknowledged that Nirvana singer/guitarist Cobain was a major influence on his songwriting. Grohl said, "Through Kurt, I saw the beauty of minimalism and the importance of music that's stripped down." Foo Fighters also utilize the technique of shifting between quiet verses and loud choruses. Writing and recording songs for the first Foo Fighters album by himself, Grohl wrote the guitar riffs to be as rhythmic as possible.
Grohl said in 2005, "I love being in a rock band, but I don't know if I necessarily wanna be in an alternative rock band from the 1990s for the rest of my life." Grohl noted that the band's acoustic tour was such an attempt to broaden the group's sound. One of the band’s most famous songs is “Learn To Fly”. The video of that song is also a spoof on the comedy-cult movie, “Airplane”.
Current band members include Grohl on lead vocals and guitars, Nate Mendel on bass guitar, an amazing Taylor Hawkins on drums who also had an image of the late, great Freddie Mercury on his bass drum (Hawkins has also played for Alanis Morissette), Chris Shiflett on lead guitar and backing vocals and Pat Smear on rhythm guitar.
Grohl kicked off the concert sprinting on the extended stage faster than Usain Bolt at the recent London Olympics! He hit the stage like something out of the movie “Fast and Furious”, a one, two knock-out punch worthy of high voltage rock and roll. The band played a lengthy set for nearly 2 1/5 hours. It’s certainly an understatement to say that Grohl is truly the driving force behind the band! Foo Fighter’s great concert was brought to us thanks to the folks over at Azalea Promotion.
